Web-services goodies over .jar files from other project:
-No need to have .jars packed/re-packed from other project, saving efforts
-No need to debug code of other project on your machine, saves time
-It is always the latest code at other end, no more assumptions
I can say web-services are at least good while development and believe they become more valuable during production.
